GROWING UP WIRED, RAISING KIDS IN THE DIGITAL AGE: REVIEW (5)

Getting a High, Escaping the World

The principal point of this chapter shows different results between female and male students at Ateneo de Manila University, in June 2011. The study indicates that “six times as many males did poorly on exams as females” (p. 218).

The other result disclosed that many young males have problems with family or romantic relationships. When it happens, they hardly communicate with their parents. These problems were induced for various reasons.
The authors, however, particularly emphasize that digital addiction was one of the reasons why male youths did not cope well with their life. This result of the survey shows that many males are more involved in gaming than females. Many males get addicted to games because they want to achieve high scores. As well, them most common type of games is pathological and porn games.

The chapter also highlights that internet addiction is highly similar to that of drug addiction. The study shows that addiction and dependence on media was the best way to describe the feelings of 1000 students, who come from various countries, participated in the survey, and were requested to give up media (Facebook, Twitter, cell phones, and television) for a single day.

The result shows that being depressed, anxious, and lonely are three factors that lead children into addiction. This addiction is now not only experienced by teens but also young children. From the various surveys, which were conducted, many people use the internet as a form of escape. Children and teens tend to tie-up with social media as a way of escaping from others. However, escaping is not the ideal way to deal with life.

Reading and Scanning, Paper Books and Screens

This chapter underlines the difference between reading and scanning books and screens. The bottom line of reading, is reading, be it on a computer (screen) or on a book. The difference between the two, however, is how it is done. Reading the book normally moves from the left to right, whereas reading a web page on the screen is scanning and skimming down, in a pattern and the screen can harm one’s eyes and make it harder to engage in reading. Reading a book allows one to use and develop their imagination while providing time to think about the content.

The survey also shows that most students like reading science-fantasy books whereas, romance, thriller, and mystery books are less interested. Students today, however, have difficulty reading books. Nicholas Carr of whom is cited by the authors, says, “To read a book demands sustained, unbroken attention to a single, static object” (p. 264). “Deep reading is what makes reading for pleasure so pleasurable” (p. 264). The social media has influenced the reading skills of children. The authors suggest that children should learn two fundamental skills in life; that is, how to read and write effectively.
