GROWING UP WIRED, RAISING KIDS IN THE DIGITAL AGE: REVIEW (6)

Raising Generation Tech, Grooming Digital Citizens
The last chapter of the book is the masterpiece of this project. This chapter provides answers to these important questions: How can we talk so kids will listen? And how can we integrate technology effectively in schools? These questions then spelled out into more specific questions: How do we moderate our children’s use of gadgets and the
internet? Do we ground them, threaten them, shout at them? How do we regulate our kids with regard to using technology?

The authors of the book suggest that the perfect manner, which allows children to listen to their parents is to have a great relationship with them. Such relationships should be engaged in the following ways:

1). Pay attention to children. Parents should make an endless effort to spend quality time with their children. It is not recommended for parents therefore, to be with children during free time only. Being with children must be a regular occurrence, which can lead to a better and more satisfying relationship with them.

2). Try to build a self-worthy relationship. Parents should carefully offer their thoughts to their children. Reassuring words spoken by parents demonstrate acceptance, shows confidence, affirms their child’s contribution, and recognizes their efforts.

3). Have a regular and good model of communication. The parents should open regularly the lines of communication. The parents should show their empathy by putting themselves in the shoes of their children.

4). Discipline with love. The role of parents is to teach and instruct their children how to behave appropriately. Parents are reminded not to dictate to their children, but rather, use an ‘I message.’ For instance: “ I am worried you’re going to sleep too late at night” (p. 307).

The integrating use of technology in school is a must, but can not replace the role of a teacher in school. It is true that technology can assist students to make sense of complex topics, and learn at their own pace or update information faster than printed books. Technology can also help captivate the attention of bored students especially when the teacher is uninspiring.

The book concludes that “Technology is never meant to replace the teacher, but rather to supplement and enhance learning” (p.352). The teachers can use technology to help students better understand certain topics or subjects. The irreplaceable role of the teacher by technology is associated with his/her role as a facilitator. As a facilitator, teachers should “provide opportunities for students to actually immerse themselves in tasks” (p.356).
